JONATHAN ROBLES IS LIGBT’S NEWEST CHAMPION!

New Hyde Park, NY:  Jonathan Robles, a 32 year old U.S. Postal Service mail handler, from Jamaica, NY, won his first LIGBT title by defeating 2-time title holder Jimmy Walsh, Glen Cove, NY 221-219 at Herrill Lanes. Jon earned $1,000 for his victory while James won $500. Rounding out the top 4 was third place finisher Julio Arnold, Woodside, NY with a 204 worth $350 and fourth went to Robert Smith, Flushing, NY with a 198 worth $300.

The shootout became a “survival of the fittest” as everyone had at least 2 opens by the sixth frame on the very tough “Beijing” pattern. Jon was getting the most handicap and when he marked in his last 3 frames it forced Jimmy to double in the 10th to win. Jim got the first strike but when he rolled 8 on his next ball Jon won his first LIGBT victory. 

The Herrill Lanes event drew a nice crowd of 82 entries, advanced 14 bowlers to the finals which paid out $3,760. The WTBA “Beijing” pattern created low cut scores: 685 in the first squad and 679 in the second squad.  High series of the tournament was shot by our 3rd place finisher Julio Arnold with a 768 series in the second squad. The wildcard winner was Vinny Nguyen, Flushing, NY with a 1329 six game block.

LIGBT’s next tournament is a special house shot event at Coram Country Lanes on Sunday, March 18th. DAMIAN WALSH WINS HIS FIRST LIGBT TITLE!

Patchogue, NY:  Damian Walsh, a 24 year old college student from Mastic, NY, won his first LIGBT title by defeating Bart Penna, Plainview, NY, 264-259 at Bowl Long Island in Patchogue. Damian earned $1,000 for his victory while Bart earned $500. Rounding out the top 5 was third place finisher Adam DeRossi, Massapequa Park, NY with a 256 worth $300, fourth went to senior Calvin Nottingham, Deer Park, NY with a 255 worth $275, and fifth was taken by Ken Hagland, E. Patchogue, NY with a 195 worth $250.

The 5 person shootout was a nail biter with the winner not determined until the final frame. Calvin took the early lead by starting with 5 strikes but opens in the 6th and 8th frames doomed his title hopes. Damian, who was getting the most handicap, threw a triple in the middle of the game to take the lead but almost gave it up with an open in the 9th frame. Adam and Bart forced Damian to mark in the final frame when they finished their games with a long string of strikes. Damian threw a strike on his first ball in the 10th frame to secure the $1,000 title.

The Bowl Long Island event drew a nice crowd of 99 entries (including 12 new members), advanced 18 bowlers to the finals (plus 7 additional cashers) and paid out $4,355. The house shot pattern created senior cut scores of; 726 & 723 and 49 & under cut scores of 768 & 767. High series of the tournament was shot by James Russo, Bronx, NY with an 848 in the first squad. Diane Fuller, W. Babylon, NY was the high women with a 726 and was added to the finals.

LIGBT’s next tournament is a sport shot event on Sunday, March 11th at Herrill Lanes in New Hyde Park. The top 4 prizes are guaranteed to pay $1,000-$500-$300-$250 with 1 in 6 each squad advancing to the finals and earning a minimum of $100. ANATOLY KHODORKOVSKY WINS $2,000 TITLE

Wantagh, NY:  Anatoly Khodorkovsky, a Verizon worker from Brooklyn, NY, won the $2,000 top prize at LIGBT’s Match Play Championship event hosted by AMF Wantagh. Anatoly’s third LIGBT title was accomplished when he defeated Abel David, Franklin Square, NY 264-248 in the final shootout. While Abel earned $1,000 for second, Tristyn Forde, a 17 year old student from Jamaica, NY took third with a 222 earning a $575 scholarship. Rounding out the top 4 was Daniel Gehrig, Baldwin, NY with a 203 worth $350.

The final 4 shootout was a great match since there was only a 9 pin difference in handicap among the 4 bowlers. Tristyn took the early lead with a triple in frames 2-4 but opened twice in the next few frames to fall behind. Anatoly jumped into the lead in the 6th frame with a triple and never looked back. Abel stayed close until a 6th frame open and just couldn’t catch Anatoly who doubled in the 9th and 10th to secure his victory. Daniel struggled throughout the match due to a popped blister on his finger but still managed to finish with a 203.

The AMF Wantagh event drew a good crowd of 159 entries, advanced 28 bowlers to the finals and paid out $7,390. The cut scores on the “USBC 40 foot” pattern were moderate; 676-723. High series of the tournament was shot by Adam DeRossi, Massapequa Park, NY with a 762 in the Friday, 10pm squad. There were 2 wildcard winners; on Friday night it was Tom Amendolora, Babylon, NY with a 1322 and on Sunday the winner was Rich Patson, Lindenhurst, NY with a 1324 six game series.

JAMES HELLEN & PAUL BAJORSKI WIN LIGBT MARATHONS

Levittown, NY:  The LIGBT crowned 2 marathon champions on President’s Weekend. The handicap champion was James Hellen, Lindenhurst, NY shooting a 1340 five game series to win the $1,000 top prize. The scratch marathon champion was Paul Bajorski, Islip, NY winning $500 with a 1275 series.

The handicap division had different leaders after each game. But the only lead that counts is after game 5 which was held by James as he finished with a 248. Finishing second, just 20 pins behind first was Andrew Muscarello, Seaford, NY with a 1320 series worth $500. Finishing third was James O’Hanlon, Keansburg, NJ with a 1295 series worth $250. It took a 1228 series to cash in the handicap marathon. 

The scratch marathon, which had 32 entries, was also close throughout the night. Paul took the lead after 3 games by shooting an 803 series including a 300 in game three. Tony Federici, Portchester, NY, almost caught Paul with final games of 268 and 256 but fell 45 pins short with a 1230 series worth $300.  Finishing third was Tommy Grunwald, Astoria, NY with a 1226 worth $200. It took an 1144 series to cash in the scratch marathon.

The Levittown Lanes President’s marathon drew a wonderful nighttime crowd of 99 entries and paid out $5,255. A total of 25 bowlers cashed in the 2 prize lists which paid out using a 1 in 4 ratio. The only 300 game of the night was shot by the scratch champion Paul Bajorski.

SCOTT KAMPF WINS LIGBT TITLE IN SHOCKING FASHION!

Plainview, NY:  Scott Kampf, a 19 year old right-hander from Levittown, NY, won the $1,000 top prize at LIGBT’s sport shot event held at AMF Plainview. Scott’s fourth LIGBT title came at the misfortunes of Dwight Dunkley, Brooklyn, NY, who lost by 1 pin 224-223. While Dwight earned $500 for second, Utrice Coleman, Deer Park, NY took third with a 214 worth $300. Rounding out the top 5 was fourth place finisher Chris Werben, E. Meadow, NY with a 199 worth $275 and fifth went to Sam Cooke, Patchogue, NY with a 192 worth $250.

The final shootout started with Dwight Dunkley dominating the field with a triple and 2 spares in his first 5 frames. But Dwight opened his next 3 frames giving everyone a shot at the title. Meanwhile Scott was the only bowler staying clean and when he doubled in the 7th and 8th frames he was back in the match. It all came down to the final frame, and when Scot threw a spare and strike, it forced Dwight to knock down 18 pins in his 10th frame to win. Dwight made a tough spare but threw a 7 count on his fill ball to lose by one pin in shocking fashion.

The AMF Plainview event drew a nice crowd of 109 entries, advanced 19 bowlers to the finals and paid out $4,405. The cut scores on the “Stockholm” pattern were low; 679 & 674. High series of the tournament was shot by Sean Teahan, E. Islip, NY with a 717 in the 3pm squad. The wildcard bonus was won by Dave Martorella, Meriden, CT with a 1335 six game series.   

LIGBT’s next tournament is a special nighttime 5-game marathon at Levittown Lanes on Sunday, February 18th starting at 11pm. JAMES RUSSO & YON GYO PHARK LIGBT MARATHON CHAMPIONS

Levittown, NY:  The LIGBT ran its annual Super Bowl 5-game marathon at Levittown Lanes and crowned 2 champions. James Russo, Bronx, NY won the handicap title worth $1,000 and Yon Gyo Phark, Flushing, NY won the scratch title earning $400. A total of 109 entries generated a $5,755 payout to 31 different bowlers.

The scratch division had a total of 21 entries and paid out 5 spots. Yon Gyo Phark led after every game and finished with an 1186 5-game total to earn $400. Finishing 20 pins behind was second place finisher Andrew Mienkiewicz, Massapequa, NY with an 1166 series worth $250. Third  went to Guy Sereno, Hempstead, NY with an 1158 series worth $200 and fourth was taken by Tommy Grunwald, Astoria, NY with an 1147 worth $150. It took an 1115 series to cash in the scratch event.   

The handicap event had two divisions; the 49 & under group, which attracted 46 entries, advanced 2 bowlers; James Russo (1377) and James Hellen, Lindenhurst, NY (1365). The senior division, which attracted 42 entries, also advanced 2 bowlers; Kenny Wright, Brooklyn, NY (1350) and Joe Benus, Massapequa Park, NY (1337). James Russo was seeded into the final match since he shot the high series. The other 3 finalists bowled a 1 game semi-final match which was won by Joe Benus with a fine 290 handicap game. James Hellen shot a 248 to finish third and earn $300 while Kenny Wright rolled a 226 to finish fourth to earn $250.

The final match between James Russo and Joe Benus was a strikefest with 20 strikes! James won the $1,000 top prize with an incredible 313 handicap game while Joe, who earned $500, had to settle for second even though he bowled a wonderful 278. It was one of the highest scoring matches in LIGBT history.

The Super Bowl marathon drew a great crowd of 109 entries (88 handicap/21 scratch) and paid out $5,755. The house shot produced very high cut scores; 1115 for the scratch division, 1212 for the senior handicap division and 1228 for the handicap 49 & under division. Adam DeRossi and Jack Chan won Brunswick KingPins in the bowling ball raffle.

TONY GEE WINS LIGBT WINTER MAJOR

Plainview, NY:  Tony Gee, a 51 year old Fox News employee from Floral Park, NY defeated Adam DeRossi, a 35 year old IT director from Massapequa Park, NY 256-248 to win the $3,000 top prize at LIGBT’s Winter Major held at AMF Plainview. Adam won $1,500 for second while James Hellen, Lindenhurst, NY won $750 finishing third with a 245. Rounding out the top 5 was fourth place finisher Dennis McMillan, Jamaica, NY with a 206 worth $500 and fifth went to Gary Brown, Coram, NY with a 204 worth $400.

It has been 6 years since Tony won an LIGBT title as his last victory came in 2012 at AMF Syosset. Tony started the match strong with 5 strikes in his first 6 frames. But he let everyone back in the match when he only marked once in his last 3 frames. Adam could have won the title with a strike in the tenth but he left a 10 pin. James could have tied Tony with a triple in the final frame but he threw only one strike.

The AMF Plainview event drew a nice crowd of 234 entries, advanced 40 bowlers to the finals and paid out $12,090. The cut scores on the “Middle Road” pattern ranged from 700 to 759. High series of the tournament was shot by Yon Gyo Phark, Flushing, NY with an 864 in the Friday, 8pm squad. There were 2 wildcard bonuses. The Friday night wildcard was won by Richie Patson, Lindenhurst, NY with a 1,469 six game series and the Sunday wildcard was won by Redy Bugaoan, Massapequa, NY with a 1384.

ANTONINO DILLUVIO IS LIGBT’S NEWEST CHAMPION!

Wantagh, NY:  Antonino Dilluvio, a 31 year old right hander who works for Uber and is from Flushing, NY, won his first LIGBT title by defeating Mike Nenna, Tobyhanna, PA 262-247 at AMF Wantagh. Antonino, who joined the club just one year ago, earned $1,000 for his victory while Mike earned $600. Rounding out the top 5 was third place finisher Robert Calabrese, Flushing, NY with a 239 worth $400, fourth went to senior Phil Rivera, Franklin Square, NY with a 229 worth $300, and fifth was taken by Jason Berchoff, Bethpage, NY with a 221 worth $250.

The 5-person shootout became a 3 person contest by the end of the match. Jason hit the pocket almost every shot but couldn’t strike and had to settle for 5th. Robert had an early lead but opened in the 6th and 8th frames to finish 3rd. When Antonino opened in the final frame both Phil and Mike needed doubles to win the title. Phil threw a 6 count and an open frame and Mike threw the first one but failed to strike on his second shot. Antonino won his first title sitting on the bench and was in shock at the final outcome.

The AMF Wantagh event drew a nice crowd of 117 entries, advanced 15 bowlers to the finals and cashed an additional 15 bowlers each earning $70. The total prize fund payout was $5,040. The house shot pattern created very high cut and cashing scores: The senior cut to the finals were 780 & 761 and the cashing scores were 753 & 732. The 49 & under division had cut scores of 805 & 769 and cash scores of 753 & 772.  High series of the tournament was shot by Phil Rivera with an 845 in the first squad.

The top 4 prizes are guaranteed to pay $3,000-$1,500-$750-$400 and 1 in 6 each squad advances to the finals and earns a minimum of $100.
