ARCHIE NABAS WINS HIS FIFTH LIGBT TITLE

Posted On: March 07, 2022

New Hyde Park, NY:   Archie Nabas, a 50-year-old left-hander from Queens Village, NY, won LIGBT’s latest sport shot tournament at Herrill Lanes. This was Archie’s fifth LIGBT title but first one in three years. Archie won the $1,000 top prize by defeating 2nd place finisher Curtis Hetmeyer, Brooklyn, NY 240-226. While Curtis earned $650 for his runner-up position, finishing in third place, with a 215, was Denis Mendelson, Levittown, NY earning $450. Rounding out the top 4 was Charles Ko, Palisades, NJ with a 214 earning him $350.

The final shootout was an exciting match as all 4 competitors had a shot at the title going into the last 2 frames. Denis made a late run by finishing with 4 strikes but fell just short. Curtis would have put a lot of pressure on Archie, since he went first, if he doubled in the final frame. But a stubborn 7-pin allowed Archie to claim his victory by just filling his final frame. Charles threw a ton of strikes but had 3 open frames which cost him a chance at the title.

The LIGBT 2-squad sport shot tournament drew a wonderful crowd of 110 entries, paid out $5,550 in prize money, and had 29 bowlers go to the cashing window. The side action awarded an additional $7,655 bringing the total event payout to $13,205. Cut scores to cash on the 42-foot Autobahn pattern were 689 at 1pm and 692 at 3pm. The wildcard winner, which is the highest 6-game series by a non-finalist, was 4th place finisher Charles Ko with a 1393.
