JOSH MARINO WINS HANDICAP TITLE KYLE DURFEE EARNS SCRATCH TITLE

Meadow, NY: The LIGBT, sponsored by Storm, ran its 12th and final event of its House Shot Series at AMF E. Meadow. The tournament used a 4-game format with the top 2 from each age handicap division advancing to a 4-person shootout. There was also a separate scratch competition. The handicap champion was Josh Marino, Port Jeff St., NY earning $1,000. The scratch winner was Kyle Durfee, Levittown, NY earning $600.

The final handicap shootout was extremely close with the winner not decided until the last frame. Sal Maenza, Franklin Sq., NY led the shootout for 9 frames by striking 7 out of his first 9 shots. But when he missed a 1-pin spare in the 10th, that opened the door for Josh, who struck on his first ball in the 10th frame to grab his first LIGBT title 269-264. Sal, who was also looking for his first title, earned $700 for his runner-up position. Finishing in 3rd place, and earning $500 was Jedd Ocampo, E. Meadow, NY with a 244. Jedd was the only finalist to throw a clean game in the shootout. Rounding out the top 4 was Harry Park, Flushing, NY with a 208 worth $400.    

The scratch event was won by Kyle Durfee with a 4-game total of 1,068 (267 average.) Finishing in 2nd with a 1,010 was Justin Kampf, Levittown, NY earning $350. Rounding out the top 3, and earning $220, was Jedd Ocampo with a 997 series. A total of 7 bowlers cashed in the $1,730 prize fund that featured a cashing score of 916. There was a total of 27 scratch entries recorded.  

LIGBT’s House Shot Series Event #12 at AMF E. Meadow drew an amazing field of 117 entries, paid out $7,565 in prize money, and had 31 bowlers go to the cashing window. The side action paid out an additional $4,315 bringing the total day’s payout to $11,880. Scores to cash were 952 in the 49 & under handicap division, 943 in the senior handicap division, and 916 in the scratch event. The winner of the Storm ball raffle was Sal Palazzalo, Bayside, NY.

GREG & MATT SCHULTZ $2,000 DOUBLES CHAMPIONS

Wantagh, NY: The LIGBT, sponsored by Storm, ran a Summer Doubles Tournament at AMF Wantagh and for the first time crowned 2 brothers as Doubles Champions. The winners of the $2,000 top prize were Greg and Matt Schultz from New Hyde Park, NY with a 1,955 four-game total. Finishing in 2nd place, just 5 pins behind, was the team of Nas Freeman, Cambria Heights, NY and Nicole Karaman, Seaford, NY with a 1,950 total earning $1,000.

Two senior bowlers teamed up to take third place earning $600; Gary Paulsen, Massapequa, NY and Frank Lunghi, Farmingdale, NY shot a 1941 series to miss winning the event by just 14 pins. Fourth place went to the team of Andrew Yi, Bayside, NY and David Choi, Flushing, NY with a 1916 worth $450. Rounding out the top 5 was the team of Josh Arrington, Springfield Gardens, NY and Tom Mullahey, Wantagh, NY with an 1899 earning them $400.

The Doubles event drew a wonderful field of 79 teams with 13 teams cashing in the $6,610 prize fund. The side action paid out an additional $3,610 bringing the total day’s payout to $10,220. The LIGBT welcomed 11 new members. The cut score to cash on the house shot pattern was 1,850.

NOLAN HERRON WINS $2,000 AT SUMMER MAJOR

Garden City, NY: The LIGBT, sponsored by Storm, ran a 2-day Summer Sport Shot Major at AMF Garden City. After 4 qualifying squads and 3 rounds of finals 17-year-old Nolan Herron, Fairfield, CT was the last man standing. Nolan earned the $2,000 top prize by defeating Beverly Parker, Brooklyn, NY 237-212 in the final shootout. While Bev earned $1,000 for second, placing third was Romie Caiaccio, Wantagh, NY with a 209 worth $500. Rounding out the top 4 was Chris Colon, Brooklyn, NY with a 157 earning $300.

The final shootout was a close contest early but as Nolan kept filling frames, and the other 3 bowlers having multiple opens, Nolan built an insurmountable lead late in the game. The battle for 2nd place was between Romie and Beverly. When Bev marked in the final frame, and Romie missed a spare, Bev secured second place by 3 pins. Chris bowled well but couldn’t carry as he had 9 counts on his first 6 out of 7 frames and settled for 4th place.

The LIGBT Spring Major was a success with 176 entries generating a $9,030 prize fund. A total of 44 bowlers visited the cashing window. The side action awarded an additional $8,565 bringing the total event payout to $17,595. Storm ball winners were James Marino and Danny Todaro.

Scores to cash on the 39 foot “Winding Road” pattern ranged from 652-672. The 4 squad leaders, each earning a bye, were: Joe LaBargo, Bayside, NY (748 Friday-8pm), James Marino, Lindenhurst, NY (703 Friday-10pm), Chris Colon, Brooklyn, NY (705 Sunday-1pm) and Darcy Monroe, E. Meadow, NY (741 Sunday-3pm.) The 3 wildcard winners were: Rich Hill, Brooklyn, NY 1343, Dave Cincotta, N. Babylon, NY 1328, and Jason Epps, Jamaica, NY 1340.

CAROLYN WILLIS WINS HANDICAP TITLE TYGER FOLMAR TAKES SCRATCH TITLE

The LIGBT, sponsored by Storm, ran its 11th event of its 12 tournament House Shot Series at AMF E. Meadow. The tournament used a 4-game format with the top 2 from each age handicap division advancing to a 4-person shootout. There was also a separate scratch competition. The handicap champion was Carolyn Willis, Bethpage, NY earning $1,000. The scratch winner was Tyger Folmar, Mirmar, FL earning $500.

The final handicap shootout was dominated by Carolyn who was searching for her first LIGBT title. Carolyn struck 6 out of 7 times in frames 2-8, and shot the only clean game of the shootout, to coast to a 21-pin victory. Second place was a battle between Ken Bruce, Oceanside, NY and Josh Arrington, Springfield Gardens, NY. When Josh threw a late 4 timer, and Kenny missed a 1-pin spare in the 9th frame, Josh claimed the $700 runner-up prize with a 253. Ken earned $500 for third place with his 222 and Carmelo Carbonara, Beechhurst, NY earned $400 for his 4th place finish shooting a 218.    

The scratch event was won by Tyger Folmar with a 4-game total of 952 (238 average.) Finishing in 2nd was Guy Sereno, Massapequa, NY with a 916 worth $250. Rounding out the top 3, and earning $200, was Joe Scianna, Ronkonkoma, NY with a 912 series. A total of 8 bowlers cashed with a cut score of 899. The scratch event generated 22 entries and a payout of $1,605.

LIGBT’s House Shot Series Event #11 at AMF E. Meadow drew an amazing field of 115 entries, paid out $7,430 in prize money, and had 31 bowlers go to the cashing window. The side action paid out an additional $5,390 bringing the total day’s payout to $12,820. Scores to cash were 980 in the 49 & under handicap division, 920 in the senior handicap division, and 899 in the scratch event. The winner of the Storm ball raffle was Henry Van Engel, Bayside, NY.     

LIGBT’s next tournament is a 2-day Sport Shot Major at AMF Garden City: Friday, July 28th and Sunday, July 30th. Entry fee is $80 per squad and a $2,000 top prize is being offered. STEVE CHIARELLA WINS $3,000 AT FIRECRACKER CLASSIC!

Meadow, NY: The LIGBT, sponsored by Storm, ran a 2-day special House Shot Series event called The Firecracker Classic. Steve Chiarella, Staten Island, NY won his first LIGBT title (he joined the Club in 2012) in historic fashion. Steve bowled in both the scratch and senior handicap divisions and advanced in both divisions to the final shootout. Amazingly, his 219-scratch game and 234-handicap game were good enough to finish in first and second place earning a total of $3,000!

To win his first title Steve had to come from way behind. In fact, halfway through the match Steve trailed the leader by 56 pins! Knowing he needed to do something drastic, Steve changed his line to the pocket and finished the last 5 frames with 4 straight strikes and a spare giving him an amazing come-from-behind victory. Finishing in third place was Utrice Coleman, Deer Park, NY with a 203 worth $700. Rounding out the top 5 was 4th place finisher Nick Falsetta, N. Babylon, NY with a 202 worth $500 and 5th place finisher Tom Catalano, N. Babylon, NY with a 187 worth $400. 

The LIGBT Firecracker Classic was a big success with 217 entries (4 qualifying squads) generating an $11,360 prize fund. A total of 61 bowlers went to the cashing window. The side action awarded an additional $7,160 bringing the total event payout to $18,520.

Scores to cash on the recreational pattern “Wall Street” varied by division. The scratch cuts ranged from 651-803. The 49 & under handicap cuts ranged from 669 to 806. The 50 & over handicap cuts were 632-685. Tom Catalano shot the high series of the weekend with an 806 handicap (803 scratch) on Friday evening. There were no 300’s shot at this event.

JENNY OH WINS SPORT SHOT SERIES #10 HER FIRST LIGBT TITLE!

Champion Jenny Oh & Husband

East Meadow, NY: The LIGBT, sponsored by Storm, ran Sport Shot Series #10 at AMF E. Meadow and crowned another first-time champion. Jenny Oh, Plainview, NY won her first LIGBT title by defeating Eddie Walker, Washington, D.C. 254-229 in the final shootout. Jenny earned $1,000 while Eddie took home $700 for his runner-up position. Finishing in third place was Dexter Wharton, Brooklyn, NY with a 207 worth $500. Rounding out the top 4 was Kevin Myree, Brooklyn, NY with a 191 worth $400.

Jenny’s title run began in the 1pm squad when she qualified with a 686 series. After 2 final rounds Jenny advanced to the shootout where she dominated. Even though she was getting the most handicap she bowled the highest scratch game (175.) That is the formula for a winning.

With Jenny dominating the shootout the other 3 bowlers were shooting for 2nd place by the 5th frame. Amazingly, Eddie came in 2nd even though it took him until the 10th frame to convert his first spare. His triple early in the match helped him finish 2nd. Dexter bowled well but couldn’t string any strikes and finished in third. Kevin started well with 6 marks but he opened 3 out of his last 4 frames to finish 4th.

The LIGBT 2-squad sport shot tournament drew an amazing crowd of 127 entries, paid out $6,410 in prize money, and had 33 bowlers go to the cashing window. The side action awarded an additional $5,030 bringing the total event payout to $11,440.  

Scores to cash on the 40 foot “Highway to Hell” pattern were 657 at 1pm and 635 at 3pm. The wildcard winner, which is the highest 6-game series by a non-finalist, was Archie Nabas, Queens Village, NY with a 1,338. High series of the tournament was shot by Eddie Walker with a 736 in the first squad.

DONNA RYAN & KAREN CARPINELLI DOUBLES CHAMPIONS AT AMF WANTAGH

Wantagh, NY: The LIGBT, sponsored by Storm, ran a Doubles Tournament at AMF Wantagh and crown its first all-female doubles champions. The winners of the $2,000 top prize were Donna Ryan, Smithtown, NY and Karen Carpinelli, Bayshore, NY with a 2,013 four-game total. Karen also finished in second with a different partner, Steven Wade, Inwood, NY. Their 1898 total was worth $1,000.

Incredibly, the top 3 teams were the same 3 bowlers with different combinations. Finishing in third place was Donna Ryan and Steven Wade with an 1883 worth $700. Individually, Karen was the big winner earning $1,500, Donna was second earning $1,350 and Steven was third earning a total of $850. The team of Diane Allen, Fleetwood Station, NY and Chris Thomas, Brooklyn, NY earned 4th place money of $550 with an 1880 total.

The doubles event drew a wonderful field of 78 teams with 12 teams cashing in the $6,580 prize fund. The side action paid out an additional $3,975 bringing the total day’s payout to $10,555. The LIGBT welcomed 9 new members. The cut score to cash on the house shot pattern was 1814.

The LIGBT will be running another Ultimate Doubles tournament at AMF Wantagh on Sunday, August 6th starting at 1pm. RYON LEE WINS SPORT SHOT SERIES #9

Garden City, NY: The LIGBT, sponsored by Storm, ran Sport Shot Series #9 at AMF Garden City and crowned another $1,000 champion. Ryon Lee, Holbrook, NY won his third LIGBT title by defeating Kenny Bruce, Oceanside, NY 236-232 in the final shootout. Ken earned $600 for his runner-up position. Finishing in third place was Nick Falsetta, N. Babylon, NY with a 220 worth $500. Rounding out the top 5 was 4th place finisher Jimmy Walsh, Glen Cove, NY with a 214 worth $400 and 5th place finisher Sunny Yee, Flushing, NY with a 186 worth $300.  

The Garden City sport shot event was a very low scoring event as the “Turnpike” pattern proved to be a challenge for everyone. Ryon’s title run started in the 1pm squad with a 669. In the shootout Ryon had two doubles in the first 6 frames giving him a lead that was never relinquished. Kenny started with 3 strikes in his first 4 frames but never struck again forcing him to settle for 2nd place. Nick started out strong with 3 strikes in his first 4 frames but 3 late opens hurt his title chances. Jimmy and Sunny bowled well but had too many opens and not enough strikes to challenge Ryon.     

The LIGBT 2-squad sport shot tournament drew an incredible crowd of 134 entries, paid out $6,610 in prize money, and had 34 bowlers go to the cashing window. The side action awarded an additional $7,215 bringing the total event payout to $13,825.  

Scores to cash on the 41 foot “Turnpike” pattern were 642 at 1pm and 629 at 3pm. The wildcard winner, which is the highest 6-game series by a non-finalist, was Eddie Griffith, St. Albans, NY with a 1,281. There were only two 700 series shot for the day Nick Falsetta with a 762 and Dexter Wharton, Brooklyn, NY with a 730. The winners of the Storm ball raffle were Mitch Benov, Seaford, NY and Eddie Griffith.
