New Hyde Park, NY: The LIGBT, sponsored by Storm, ran its fourth Sport Shot Series event at Herrill Lanes. Bill Verni, W. Babylon, NY won the $1,000 top prize by defeating 2nd place finisher Rich Palumbo, Levittown, NY 229-228 who earned $500. This was Bill’s 4th LIGBT title since becoming a member 12 years ago. Finishing in third place was Damian Rodriquez, Freeport, NY with a 207 worth $300. Rounding out the top 5 was Ed Passaro, Hicksville, NY in 4th place with a 192 worth $250 and William Luna, Corona, NY in 5th with a 170 worth $235.
Bill’s title run started in the noon squad as he earned the bye as squad leader (706) putting him directly into the shootout. The 5-person shootout was a very competitive contest with all 5 bowlers within a few pins going into the final 3 frames. Bill tripled in frames 7-9 forcing Rich to strike out to claim the title. Rich threw the first strike in the 10th but missed on his second shot giving Bill the title.
The LIGBT 2-squad sport shot tournament drew 66 entries, paid out $3,450 in prize money, and had 17 bowlers go to the cashing window. The side action awarded an additional $3,185 bringing the total event payout to $6,635.
Scores to cash on the 45 foot “Route 66” pattern were 682 at noon and 709 at 2pm. The wildcard winner, which is the highest 6-game series by a non-finalist, was Anthony Fusco, W. Hempstead, NY with a 1,405. High series of the tournament was shot by Matt Schultz, New Hyde Park, NY with a 763.
