Farmingdale, NY:  Tommy Grunwald, Astoria, NY defeated Mike Nian, Bayside, NY 269-229 in the final shootout of LIGBT’s Super Tournament at Farmingdale Lanes. Tommy won in a dominating performance despite the fact he was giving at least 27 pins in handicap to the other 4 shootout bowlers. Tommy’s victory, which was his second LIGBT title in the four years he has been an LIGBT member, was worth $5,000 while Mike earned $2,500 for second.

The final shootout, which took place after midnight, involved five bowlers that survived four rounds of finals. Finishing third was Ron Moskow, Huntington Station, NY with a 228 worth $1,500. Fourth went to Fred Jankowsky, Brooklyn, NY with a 204 earning him $1,250 and fifth went to 77 year old Redy Bugaoan, Massapequa, NY with a 182.

The shootout took on a split personality as Fred and Redy opened in almost every frame while the other 3 were marking to make up the huge handicap difference they were giving. Tommy put all 10 of his shots in the pocket, which included a 7 bagger, to pull away from the field by the 8^th frame. The real competition was for second where Ron, who had a 6 pin lead over Mike in the 9^th frame, threw two 6 counts in the tenth to lose by 1 pin. 

The Super Tournament drew an amazing crowd of 532 entries plus 51 desperado entries. There were 95 finalists who shared in a $31,200 prize fund. Twenty-one Brunswick balls were won in the high game pots, Knockout ball cleaner was awarded to the 7 squad leaders, and another $24,000 was paid out in additional side action. Total payout for the weekend was over $60,000!

LIGBT’s next tournament is Sunday, March 6, 2016 at AMF Garden City. This 2 squad event features guaranteed prizes of $1,000-$500-$300-$250 and 1 in 6 advancing to the finals each squad. E. Islip, NY:  Dave Soren, a 58 year old property manager from Long Beach, NY, won his first LIGBT title at East Islip Lanes in a special house shot tournament. Dave defeated Derek Brandi, Whitestone, NY, 297-294 in the final shootout to earn the $1,000 top prize and an invitation to the LIGBT Tournament of Champions. While Derek earned $500 for second Fred Jankowsky, Brooklyn, NY earned $350 for third with a 292. Rounding out the top 5 was 4^th place finisher Dave Petruzziello, West Haven, CT with a 284 worth $300 and in fifth was Scott Teitler, Patchogue, NY with a 250 earning him $250.

The 5 person shootout was a tight match with many lead changes. Fred had the lead by throwing 7 out of his first 8 strikes. But that lead quickly disappeared when he opened in both the 9^th and 10^th frames. Dave Soren, who opened in the second frame, struck out from the 5^th frame on to win. If Dave did not strike out he would have left the door open for Derek to capture the title.

The East Islip house shot tournament drew a great crowd of 111 entries, advanced 19 bowlers to the finals, and paid out $4,355. As expected the house shot pattern resulted in very high scoring with cuts of 816 in the 1pm squad and 815 in the 3pm squad.  High series of the tournament was shot by 2 of our shootout finalists; Dave Soren and Dave Petruzziello with both shot an 899 series. There were no 300 games but Scott Teitler did shoot 299.  

LIGBT’s next tournament is our biggest event in our history; The Super Tournament at Farmingdale Lanes. This 3-day event, February 26-28, features top prizes of $5,000-1^st, $2,500-2^nd, $1,250-3^rd, $1,000-4th. One in 6 each squad advances to the finals and cashes for a minimum of $150. Farmingdale, NY:  Dexter Sapp, a Verizon technician from Valley Stream, NY won the 2016 LIGBT Super Bowl Marathon. Dexter, who now has the most titles in the club, rolled a 297 handicap game in the final shootout to defeat Darryl McDuffie, Floral Park, NY by 28 pins. While Dexter earned $1,000 for his victory, Darryl took home $600 with his 269. Rounding out the top 4 was third place finisher Bill Verni, W. Babylon NY with a 259 worth $400 and fourth went to Deon Taitte, Amityville, NY with a 243 earning him $300.

To advance to the marathon’s final shootout you had to shoot a 1319 series. The top 4 included two bowlers looking for their first title (Darryl and Deon.) Deon, who was getting the most handicap, had the lead going into the 7^th frame but a 5 count open dropped him to fourth. Dexter and Darryl traded strikes at the end with Dexter coming out on top.

The 2016 Super Bowl Marathon drew 73 entries, paid out 19 cashing spots (better than 1 in 4) totaling $4,390. Farmingdale’s 42 foot house shot was used resulting in a cashing score of 1259 and a 1319 to advance to the top 4. High series of the tournament was shot by Deon with a 1376 5-game handicap series.

During the Super Bowl the LIGBT ran a special match play tournament. The final match was a nail biter as Angelo DeSena, Brooklyn, NY struck out in the final frame to defeat Maggie Joseph, Bayshore, NY 262-260. Angelo won $250 plus an invitation to the Tournament of Champions and Maggie, who is already entered into the TOC, won $130.

E. Meadow, NY:  Beverly Parker, from New York City, won her second LIGBT title on Sunday at AMF East Meadow. Bev won the $1,000 title with a 229 when Max Thomas from Stamford, CT opened in the 10^th to fall from first to third place. Max who shot a 221 earned $350 for third while Sal Florindo, Forest Hills, NY shot a 227 to earn $500 for second. Finishing fourth was Dave Perrone, Babylon, NY with a 185 worth $300.  

The 4 person shootout was close all 10 frames but it was the way it finished that everyone will remember. Going into the final frame Max, who was trailing most of the match, had a triple and needed just a mark to win since Bev opened in her final frame. Shockingly, Max threw a 5 count and only got 2 on his spare attempt to drop from first place to third. Bev couldn’t believe her luck when she was handed the winner’s trophy and $1,000 check.  

The AMF East Meadow tournament drew a great crowd of 139 entries, advanced 24 bowlers to the finals, and paid out $5,075. Kegel’s “Highway to Hell” pattern (40 feet) was used resulting in cut scores of 706 in the 1pm squad and 718 in the 3pm squad. High series of the tournament was shot by Eddie Cintron with an 807 in the 3pm squad.  

LIGBT’s next tournament is a 5-game handicap marathon at Farmingdale Lanes on Super Bowl Sunday, February 7^th. The action begins at 1pm with guaranteed top prizes of $1,000-1^st, $600-2^nd, $400-3^rd, & $300-4th. One in 4 will cash for a minimum of $100 and the top 4 will advance to a final shootout. Plainview, NY:  Joe LaBargo, a 25 year old right-hander from Bayside, NY, won his first LIGBT title at AMF Plainview. Joe defeated second place finisher Clive Tobias, Huntington, NY, 294-281 in a very exciting finish. Joe’s first title earned him $500 plus an invitation to LIGBT’s Tournament of Champions and Clive earned $300 for his second straight runner-up finish. Finishing third was Gary Brown, Coram, NY with a 273 worth $275 and fourth went to Ralph Yandoli, Bellmore, NY with a 250 earning him $250.

The 4 person shootout was a very close match that started out slow and finished with a bang. Halfway through the shootout only two bowlers had a double. But all 4 bowlers threw the last 4 strikes in a row to finish the match. Joe finished like a champion throwing the last 6 strikes in a row. All four bowlers in the shootout were looking for their first LIGBT title.

Despite a major blizzard the day before 36 bowlers made it to AMF Plainview to compete. Although the prize fund was based on entries due to the weather, all guarantees were met except for the top two prizes. A total of 7 bowlers advanced to the finals which paid out $1,565. The house shot event resulted in big scores as the cut at 1pm was 783 and 831 at 3pm. High series of the tournament was shot by Clive Tobias with an 856 in the 1pm squad. Joe LaBargo had the only 300 game.

Levittown, NY:  Abel David, a 59 year old IT Director from Franklin Square, NY, won his second LIGBT title at South Levittown Lanes. Abel defeated second place finisher Clive Tobias, Huntington, NY 220-214 in a very tight match. Abel earned $1,000 for his victory while Clive took home $500 for his runner-up position. Finishing third was Richard Walker, Brooklyn, NY with a 211 worth $350 and fourth went to Jack Edvabsky, Levittown, NY with a 202 worth $300.

The 4-person shootout was a very tight match as only 4 pins separated the bowlers after 5 frames. Jack and Rich had consecutive opens late which hurt their title hopes. Going into the final frame Abel and Clive were separated by only 5 pins and the difference stayed that way as both bowlers opened in the 10th. The 220 winning score was one of the lowest in LIGBT history.

The South Levittown tournament drew a great crowd of 135 entries, advanced 24 bowlers to the finals, and paid out $5,130. The PBA Chameleon pattern (43 feet) was used resulting in cut scores of 733 in the 1pm squad and 720 in the 3pm squad. High series of the tournament was shot by Cary Fishman with an 803 in the 3pm squad.

Babylon, NY:  Kevin Miller, who works for JP Morgan Chase and resides in New York City, won the $2,000 top prize at LIGBT’s 2016 Winter Major at AMF Babylon. Kevin secured his first LIGBT title with an impressive 291 handicap game giving him a 33 pin victory over second place finisher Darryl McDuffie, Floral Park, NY who earned $1,000 with a 258. Finishing third was Wayne Garvey, Manchester, CT with a 215 worth $750 and fourth was taken by So Young Chin Whitestone, NY with a 191 earning her $500.

With the 4 bowlers in the final shootout only having 1 LIGBT title combined you would think the scoring would get off to a slow start. But the 4 bowlers started strong as there was only 1 open through the first 5 frames. Kevin, who was getting the most handicap, had 3 strikes in the first 5 frames giving him the early lead. Despite Darryl’s 9-pin no tap 300 in the finals, Kevin finished strong with a triple to win the title before the last frame.   

The LIGBT Winter Major drew a 4 squad crowd of 201 entries plus 31 desperado entries. A total of 38 bowlers cashed (almost 1 in 3) in a prize fund that paid $9,100. Kegel’s 39 foot Winding Road pattern was used and scoring was on the high side for an LIGBT major with cuts ranging from 729 to 754. High series of the tournament was shot by Gary Paulsen, Massapequa, NY with an 824 in the Friday 9pm squad. Gary’s 800 was the only one of the tournament. Twelve bowlers earned a Brunswick Nirvana by shooting the high handicap score each game in every squad.

LIGBT’s next tournament is at South Levittown Lanes on Sunday, January 17^th (1pm& 3pm). Top prizes are guaranteed to pay $1,000, $500, $300 and $250. Farmingdale, NY: The LIGBT will be hosting a 5-game handicap marathon at Farmingdale Lanes on Super Bowl Sunday, February 7^th at 1pm. Immediately following the marathon all participants are invited to a Super Bowl party that will include food, raffles, big screen TVs, and a special match play tournament. Although this is an LIGBT event non-members are welcomed and will not be required to pay a membership fee. All non-members will get 20 pins off their average when determining handicap.

The 5-game handicap marathon will feature guaranteed top prizes of $1,000-$600-$400-$300 and an amazing 1 in 4 cashing ratio! The top 4 will advance to a 1 game shootout. A modified house shot will be put down and a handicap of 90% of 220 will be used. The entry fee is only $100 and includes the Super Bowl party. Non-participants are welcome to stay for the party for only $25.
