GUY SERENO WINS HIS FIRST LIGBT TITLE

Plainview, NY:  Guy Sereno, a 40 year old solar panel installer from W. Hempstead, NY won his first LIGBT title at LIGBT’s 5-game handicap marathon held at AMF Plainview. Guy shot a 268 in the final shootout to defeat second place finisher Max Thomas, Stamford, CT by 6 pins. Guy’s victory was worth $1,500 while Max took home $750 with his 262. Rounding out the top 4 was third place finisher Bill Verni, W. Babylon, NY with a 254 worth $400 while fourth place went to Yon Gyo Phark, Flushing, NY with a 199 worth $300.

The final shootout was a very close and high scoring match right to the end. All of the finalists, except for Yon Gyo, threw a ton of strikes with only 6 pins separating the top 3 going into the 9th frame. With Bill opening in the 9th frame, and Max failing to throw a double in the final 2 frames, meant Guy just had to mark in the 10th. When he made an easy 1 pin spare Guy finally got his first LIGBT trophy in 5 years.

The AMF Plainview marathon drew a crowd of 60 entries and generated a 12 person prize list of $3,905. The tournament pattern was “USBC White Pattern #2” (41 feet) resulting in a cashing score of 1204 and a final shootout cut score of 1242. High 5-game handicap series of the tournament was shot by Max Thomas with a 1354.

LIGBT’s next tournament is a special 2-day event at Strike 10 Lanes in Deer Park October 7 & 9. Top prizes are guaranteed to pay $2,000-1st & $1,000-2nd. HECTOR PEREZ WINS HIS FIRST LIGBT TITLE

Whitestone, NY:  Hector Perez, a 40 year old bartender from Whitestone, NY won his first LIGBT title in a clutch performance. Hector defeated Phil Rivera, Franklin Square, NY 256-252 to win the $1,200 top prize. While Phil won $600 for second, Jeonghun Ji, College Point, NY finished third with a 239 worth $400. Rounding out the top 4 was the defending Whitestone champion Andrew Mienkiewicz, Massapequa, NY with a 202 worth $300.

Hector’s road to victory was an up and down affair.  Hector took a commanding lead with an early triple but gave the lead back with opens in the 5th and 8th frames. Phil, who had struck in the 8th and 9th frames, could have shut Hector out with strike in the 10th but he spared giving Hector a chance at the title. Hector needed a double and threw 2 perfect shots to claim his first LIGBT trophy.

The Whitestone Lanes tournament drew a nice fall crowd of 92 entries, advanced 17 bowlers to the finals, and paid out $4,160. The house shot event produced high cut scores: 773 at 1pm and 759 at 3:30pm. High series of the tournament was shot by Alex Padmore, Jamaica, NY with an 832 in the 1pm squad. The wildcard winner was Pak Wong, New York, NY with a 1503.

LIGBT’s next tournament is a 5-game handicap marathon on Sunday; October 2nd at AMF Plainview. Top prizes are guaranteed to pay $1,500-1st, $750-2nd, $400-3rd, & $300-4th. TONY JIMENEZ WINS HIS FIRST LIGBT TITLE

New Hyde Park, NY:  Tony Jimenez, a retired 65 year old right hander from Massapequa Park, NY won his first LIGBT title in dominating fashion. Tony defeated Steve Chiu, Little Neck, NY 261-203 to win the $1,200 top prize. While Steve won $600 for second, Andrew Mienkiewicz, Massapequa, NY finished third with a 198 worth $400. Rounding out the top 4 was last event’s winner Justin Kampf, Levittown, NY, with a 184 worth $300.

Tony was leading the final shootout even before he threw his first ball due to the fact he was getting 20 more pins in handicap than the other 3 competitors. Tony started out hot with 6 consecutive marks, including a triple, which gave him an insurmountable lead. By the late frames the contest was for second place and when Steve marked in the tenth he edged out Andrew by 5 pins.   

The Herrill Lanes tournament drew a nice fall crowd of 92 entries, advanced 17 bowlers to the finals, and paid out $4,220. The tournament pattern was “Winding Road” (39 feet) resulting in moderate cut scores: 693 at 1pm and 699 at 3pm. High series of the tournament was shot by John Mienkiewicz, Plainview, NY with a 766  in the 1pm squad. Amazingly, a father and son were both squad leaders! The wildcard winner was Paulo Martins, New York, NY with a 1370. The women bonus winner was Tiffany Ocasio, Lynbrook, NY with a 678.

JUSTIN KAMPF WINS HIS FIRST LIGBT TITLE

Farmingdale, NY:  Justin Kampf, a pro shop manager and student, from Levittown, NY defeated Damilyn LaCarruba, Lindenhurst, NY, 233-228 in the final shootout of LIGBT’s Match Play Championships held at Farmingdale Lanes. Justin joined his brother and father as LIGBT champions. Justin earned $1,500 for his victory while Damilyn earned $800. Rounding out the final 4 were Ed Eng, Flushing, NY with a 224 worth $600 and Yon Gyo Phark, Flushing, NY 209 worth $500.

The final shootout was extremely exciting and watched by a huge crowd.  Justin started the match with 4 out of 5 strikes while the other 3 bowlers had a least one open frame the first half of the game. But when Justin threw a split in the 6th frame he gave up the lead to both Ed and Damilyn. Ed had a chance to lock out Justin but opened in the 10th frame. Damilyn also had a chance to win but lost 8 pins in count the final 3 frames. Justin needed a mark in the final frame to win and he converted a spare to claim his first title.

The Farmingdale Lanes tournament drew a great summer crowd of 178 entries plus 39 desperado entries, advanced 34 bowlers to the finals, and paid out an $8,000 prize fund. The tournament pattern was “Athens” (40 feet) resulting in moderate cut scores: 705 at noon, 717 at 2pm, and 703 at 4pm. High series of the tournament was shot by Darryl Freeman with a 755  in the 4pm squad. High handicap scores in the noon squad won Brunswick balls; William Luna (260), Frank Williams (260), and Hector Diaz Jr. (263).

JAMES DICKERSON WINS $3,000 AT LIGBT MAJOR

Garden City, NY:  James Dickerson, a 48 year-old letter carrier from Norwalk, CT won the $3,000 top prize at LIGBT’s “End of Summer” Classic at AMF Garden City. James won his second LIGBT title with a 17 pin victory over Gary Paulsen, Massapequa, NY 233-216. While Gary earned $1,500, third place went to 5-time LIGBT title holder, Cary Fishman from NYC with a 192 worth $750. The final spot in the shootout went to Rafael Franco, NYC, with a 179 worth $500.   

The End of Summer Classic shootout was a good one with another exciting finish. James was giving handicap to the three shootout finalists but their advantage quickly disappeared as they had multiple opens and James stayed clean through the first 8 frames. Going into the 9th frame Gary had a 2 pin lead over James and amazingly both opened in the 9th. Gary shot first in the final frame and he chopped a spare to leave the door open for James. James doubled in the tenth to win the title and the big money.

The LIGBT “End of Summer” Classic drew a great crowd of 290 entries plus 40 desperado entries. A total of 59 bowlers cashed in a prize fund that paid $16,425. Kegel’s 41 foot Turnpike pattern was used and scoring was moderate with cuts ranging from 678 to 704. High series of the tournament was shot by Lou Getzelman with an 822 in the Sunday noon squad. Fifteen bowlers won a Brunswick Absolute Nirvana by shooting the high handicap score each game in every squad.

ANDREW MIENKIEWICZ FINALLY GETS HIS LIGBT TITLE

Whitestone, NY:  The LIGBT has another first time champion as Andrew Mienkiewicz, Massapequa, NY, defeated Christoff Farrell, Ozone Park, NY 307-305 in the final shootout of LIGBT’s house shot tournament at Whitestone Lanes. Andrew’s 8 year quest for his first title was worth $1,200 while Christoff, who was also looking for his first LIGBT victory, earned $600. Finishing third was Tiffany Smalls, New York, NY with a 232 worth $400 and fourth went to Michelle LaSala, Whitestone, NY with a 190 worth $300.

The finish of the Whitestone final shootout had to be one of the most exciting in LIGBT history. While the two women struggled throughout the match the 2 men traded strikes most of the game. Christoff had a 13 pin lead going into 9th frame. When Andrew finished with the final 5 strikes it forced Christoff to throw the first one in the tenth to win the title. Unfortunately for Christoff, he left a 10 pin giving Andrew the victory.

The Whitestone Lanes tournament drew a great summer crowd of 126 entries, advanced 22 bowlers to the finals, and paid out $5,400. The house shot tournament produced very high cut scores as it took a 783 in the 1pm squad and a 774 in the 3pm to make the finals. High series of the tournament was shot by Tiffany Smalls, New York, NY with an 861 in the 3pm squad. Dave Soren was the wildcard winner with a six game block of 1553.

LIGBT’s next tournament is a 2-day major event at AMF Garden City; Friday, August 26th and Sunday, August 28th. Top prizes are guaranteed to pay $3,000-1st, $1,500-2nd, $750-3rd, & $500-4th. DAVID PETRUZZIELLO JR. WINS HIS FIRST LIGBT TITLE

East Meadow, NY:  David Petruzziello Jr., a 33 year old Auto Dealer General Manager from West Haven, CT won his first LIGBT tournament at AMF E. Meadow on Sunday.  David made the finals as the “wildcard” winner and swept through 4 final rounds to claim the $1,200 top prize. To win the LIGBT trophy David defeated Jeonghun Ji, Flushing, NY 271-227 in the final shootout. While Jeonghun earned $600 for second Andrew Mienkiewicz, Massapequa,NY earned $400 for third with a 216 and fourth went to Darcy Monroe, East Meadow, NY with a 206 worth $300.

The final shootout was close early as all 4 bowlers had an open by the third frame. David’s road to victory began, after he opened in the first frame, by throwing the next 5 out of 6 strikes. None of the other 3 competitors would put up a fight as David cruised to a 44 pin victory.

The AMF E. Meadow tournament drew a great summer crowd of 119 entries, advanced 21 bowlers to the finals, and paid out $5,200. The tournament pattern was “Alcatraz” (38 feet) resulting in moderate cut scores: 695 at 1pm and 671 at 3pm. High series of the tournament was shot by Jeonghun Ji with a 755  in the 3pm squad.

JOSH VALDES REPEATS AS CHAMPION

Levittown, NY:  Josh Valdes, a 33 year-old FDNY EMT from Staten Island, won his second consecutive house shot title at S. Levittown Lanes. Josh defeated Matt Stahura, Bayside, NY   286-253 to earn the $1,000 top prize. While Matt earned $600 for second, Jarret McMillan, Jamaica, NY came in third with a 250 worth $400. Fourth went to Robert Aiello, Oceanside, NY with a 203 earning him $300.

The shootout was a good one as Josh didn’t earn the title until late in the match. After 5 frames Josh was trailing due to an open in his second frame and no string of early strikes. But he starting cranking out the strikes in the fifth frame with 5 in a row and coasted to a 33 pin victory. Matt secured his second place finish with spare in the final frame. Josh was the only title holder in the final shootout.

The South Levittown house shot tournament drew a great summer crowd of 124 entries, advanced 21 bowlers to the finals, and paid out $4,700. The house shot resulted in high cut scores; 784 at 1pm squad and 755 at 3pm. High handicap series of the tournament was shot by Matt in the 1pm squad with an 845.
