BILL VERNI & JONATHAN MCCORD WIN LIGBT MARATHONS

Levittown, NY:  The LIGBT crowned 2 champions on New Year’s Day at Levittown Lanes. The handicap marathon champion was Bill Verni, W. Babylon, NY winning $1,200. The scratch marathon champion was Jonathan McCord, Medford, NY winning $500. A record entry count of 176 entries competed for over $10,000 in prize money.

The handicap marathon, which attracted 142 entries, featured 2 age divisions. The 49 & under group advanced 2 bowlers to the finals; Emmanuel Edobor-Osula, S. Richmond, NY earned the top seed with a 1351 five game series. Devin Flowers, Rosedale, NY was seeded into the semi-final match with a 1326 series. The senior division also advanced 2 bowlers to the finals; Bill Verni with a 1317 series and Alex Padmore, Jamaica, NY with a 1309 series. To cash in the 1 in 4 prize lists the under division cut was 1157 and the senior cut was 1181.

In the handicap semi-final shootout the 3 finalists were within 2 pins of each other going into the final frame. Bill Verni advanced to the final match with a 248 while Devin and Alex tied with 239’s to earn $400 each. The final match was decided early as Bill defeated Emmanuel 283-233 for a 50 pin victory. Bill earned $1,200 and Emmanuel took home $600.

The scratch marathon prize list was determined by the 5-game totals. Jonathan McCord shot a 266 in his 5th game to snatch the $500 title. While Jonathan finished with an 1169 series, finishing second was Dennis McMillan, Jamaica, NY with an 1139 series worth $315. Rounding out the top 4 was Max Thomas, Stamford, CT with an 1122 worth $250 and Pierce Field, Shirley, NY with an 1113 worth $200. The 1 in 4 cashing score for the scratch event was 1094 with minimum prize paying $100.

The Levittown Lanes New Year’s Day marathon drew an incredible crowd of 176 entries and paid out $10,470. Only one 300 game was shot all day and it was by 15 year old Devin Flowers. Two Brunswick balls were raffled and won by Jack Chan and Tom Gull.

CALVIN NOTTINGHAM WINS LIGBT HOLIDAY TOURNAMENT

Plainview, NY:  Calvin Nottingham, a 67 year old right-hander from Deer Park, NY won LIGBT’s annual holiday tournament at AMF Plainview. Calvin defeated Kevin Miller, New York, NY 221-218 to win his first LIGBT title and the $1,500 top prize. While Kevin won $1,000 for second, Andrew McKenna, Franklin Square, NY finished third with a 210 worth $750. Rounding out the top 4 was Maniram Basdeo, Bronx, NY with a 205 worth $500.

The final shootout had the most shocking ending in LIGBT history. The shootout was close as scoring was low and strikes hard to come by. Going into the final frame Kevin had a 10 pin lead over Calvin. Calvin finished with a spare and strike which meant Kevin needed just 8 pins to win the match. He threw a 7 count on his first ball and missed all 3 pins to give Calvin his first LIGBT victory in shocking fashion.

The AMF Plainview holiday tournament drew a record crowd of 220 entries, advanced 36 bowlers to the finals, and paid out $9,750. The tournament pattern was “Stockholm” (34 feet) resulting in cut scores of: 709 at noon, 728 at 2pm and 731 at 4pm. High series of the tournament was shot by Weldon Drayton Jr., Central Islip, NY in the second squad with an 839 series. The wildcard winner was Brendan Delaney, Levittown, NY with a 1436 six game series. Sun Kim, Flushing, NY won $410 in the no-tap jackpot in the 4pm squad.

JAMES HELLEN WINS LIGBT CORAM HOUSE SHOT EVENT!

Coram, NY:  James Hellen, a 34 year old right hander from Long Beach, NY, won his second consecutive LIGBT house shot title by defeating Connor Druhm, Bayport, NY 263-254 at Coram Country Lanes. James earned $1,000 for his victory while Connor, who is recovering from wrist surgery, earned $500. Rounding out the top 5 was third place finisher senior Sal Florindo, Forest Hills, NY with a 251 worth $350, fourth went to Darcy Monroe, E. Meadow, NY with a 217 worth $300, and fifth was taken by Adam DeRossi, Massapequa Park, NY with a 180 worth $250.

The man shootout was well bowled with a lot of strikes. Darcy got off to a fast start with 4 in a row but 3 late splits hurt his title hopes. Adam struggled the entire match and had to settle for 5th place. Sal hit the pocket all game and threw a no-tap 300 but fell short by just 12 pins. The champion wasn’t decided until the 10th frame as Connor needed a double to win. Unfortunately he left a 10 pin which gave James the title and $1,000 top prize. 

The Coram Country Lanes event drew a nice crowd of 106 entries, advanced 18 bowlers to the finals and paid out an amazing $4,200 despite the reduced entry fee of $65. The house shot pattern created cut scores of; 777 & 776. High series of the tournament was shot by our champion James with an 880 in the first squad. The wildcard winner was our third place finisher Sal with a 1472 six game series.

JULIO ARNOLD WINS LIGBT THANKSGIVING MAJOR

Plainview, NY:  Julio Arnold, a 38 year old security officer from Woodside, NY, won the $3,000 top prize at The LIGBT Thanksgiving Major held at AMF Plainview. Julio shot an incredible 293 handicap game to defeat second place finisher Kameron Smith, Mamaronek, NY by 58 pins. While Kameron’s 235 earned him $1,500 for second place, finishing third was Sean Teahan, Islip, NY with a 222 worth $750. Rounding out the top 4 was senior bowler Dave Soren, Long Beach, NY with a 208 worth $500.

Julio, who has been an LIGBT member since 2010 but had not won a title since 2011, took out his 6-year frustration in the final shootout. Julio started out with a 10 pin spare and then threw 8 strikes in a row to lock up the title by the 8th frame. The battle for second place wasn’t decided until the final frame. Sean and Kameron were tied and when Kameron struck on his first ball, and Sean didn’t, Kameron locked up the runner-up position.

The AMF Plainview event drew a nice Thanksgiving weekend crowd of 193 entries, advanced 34 bowlers to the finals and paid out $11,410. The cut scores on the “Turnpike” pattern ranged from 726 to 746. High series of the tournament was shot by James Marino, Lindenhurst, NY with an 874 in the Friday, 8pm squad. There were 2 wildcard bonuses. The Friday night wildcard was won by Adam DeRossi, Massapequa Park, NY with a 1,400 six game series and the Sunday wildcard was won by Phil Rivera, Franklin Square, NY with a 1437. The no-tap jackpot was hit three times; Eddie Eng won $276 on Friday night, Rob Longiaru won $195 on Sunday at 3pm, and Sun Kim won $84 on Sunday at 5pm.

JAMES HELLEN IS LIGBT’S NEWEST CHAMPION!

Levittown, NY:  James Hellen, a 34 year old right hander from Long Beach, NY, won his first LIGBT title by defeating Mike Nenna, Tobyhanna, PA 261-245 at Levittown Lanes. James, who joined the club this year, earned $1,000 for his victory while Mike earned $500. Rounding out the top 5 was third place finisher Cameron Potts, Babylon, NY with a 238 worth $300, fourth went to Jimmy Walsh, Glen Cove, NY with a 205 worth $275, and fifth was taken by Peter McDonald, N. Bellmore, NY with a 186 worth $250.

The 5-person shootout got off to a hot start on the house shot pattern. Three of the five competitors began with doubles with James kicking off his game with a triple. Cameron started off slow but threw 5 strikes from the fifth frame on and could have won his first title with a strike in the 10th. Mike also could have won his first title but a split in the 10th cost him the trophy. James secured his title with a great finish; a double in the 8th and 9th frames and a mark in the final frame.

The Levittown event drew a nice crowd of 109 entries, advanced 20 bowlers to the finals and paid out an amazing $4,605 despite the reduced entry fee of $65. The house shot pattern created reasonable cut scores of; 726 & 741. High series of the tournament was shot by Emmanuel Edobor-Osula, S. Richmond, NY, with an 804 in the second squad. The wildcard winner was Michael Spindel, Plainview, NY with a 1424 six game series. Natalie Villemure, Levittown, NY was added to the finals as high women with a 737 series in the 3:30pm squad.

LOU GETZELMAN WINS HIS FIRST LIGBT TITLE

Meadow, NY: Louis Getzelman, a 61 year old business owner from Massapequa, NY, won the $1,000 top prize at LIGBT’s Sport Shot event held at AMF E. Meadow. Lou’s won his first LIGBT title by defeating Rafael Ongjoco, Babylon, NY 236-230 in the final shootout. While Rafael earned $500 for second, Leslie Farrell, Flushing, NY took third with a 218 worth $300. Rounding out the top 6 was fourth place finisher Dave Soren, Long Beach, NY with a 215 worth $250, fifth went to Jerry Maley, Bayside, NY with a 201 earning him $225 and sixth was taken by Archie Nabas with a 199 worth $200.
The 6 bowler final shootout was a matter of survival as everyone had an open by the fourth frame. Lou and Rafael both doubled in the 7th and 8th frames to pull away from the field. Going into the last frame Lou had an 8 pin lead and when he marked it gave him his first LIGBT title.

The AMF E. Meadow event drew a crowd of 62 entries, advanced 11 bowlers to the finals and paid out $3,295. The cut scores on the “Alcatraz” pattern were moderate; 718 & 706. High series of the tournament was shot by the second place finisher Rafael with a 743 in the 1pm squad. The wildcard bonus was won by Jimmy Walsh, Glen Cove, NY with a 1378 six game series. No one hit the no-tap jackpot and is now worth $212.

JOE SCIANNA WINS HIS FIRST LIGBT TITLE October 29, 2017

Babylon, NY:  Joe Scianna, a 50 year old right-hander from Ronkonkoma, NY, won the $1,000 top prize at LIGBT’s Sport Shot event held at AMF Babylon. Joe’s first LIGBT title became reality when he defeated Lenny Nguyen, New York, NY 235-220 in the final shootout. While Lenny earned $500 for second, Joe Kingston, Ronkonkoma, NY took third with a 214 worth $300. Rounding out the top 4 was Jarret McMillan, Jamaica, NY with a 196 earning him $250.

The final shootout consisted of 4 very good bowlers with all having a shot at the title going into the final frame. When Jarret opened in the tenth his championship bid ended. Joe Kingston was on a double heading into the 10th but a ringing 10 pin cost him the title. Lenny also could have won with a double but a stone 8 pin ruined his chance. Joe Scianna secured his title with a trip 4 pin strike giving him a 15 pin victory.

The AMF Babylon event drew a crowd of 86 entries, advanced 15 bowlers to the finals and paid out $3,970. The cut scores on the “Boardwalk” pattern were moderate; 701 & 714. High series of the tournament was shot by Cynthia Cooke, Patchogue, NY with a 792 in the 3:30pm squad. The wildcard bonus was won by Eddie Cintron, Laurelton, NY with a 1389 six game series. Joe Scianna won the no-tap jackpot worth $552 in the second squad to make his total earnings for the day $1,552.

CHRIS WERBEN WINS LIGBT FALL MAJOR

New Hyde Park, NY:  Chris Werben, E. Meadow, NY, won the $3,000 top prize at LIGBT’s Fall Major held at Herrill Lanes. Chris won his first LIGBT title by defeating Vito Genova Sr., Franklin Square, NY 243-240 in an exciting final shootout. Vito earned $1,500 for second while Archie Nabas, Queens Village, NY finished third with a 223 worth $750. Rounding out the final 6 shootout was 4th place finisher Johnny Kim, Fresh Meadows, NY with a 218 worth $600, 5th went to Staci Minkoff, Flushing, NY with a 202 worth $550 and 6th went to Ed Marquez, Elmont, NY with a 186 earning him $500.

The final 6 shootout, which paid out $6,900, was not decided until the final frame. Vito got off to a hot start with 4 strikes to take an early lead. Vito held the lead until he opened three times in the middle of the game. Meanwhile Chris kept filling frames and when Vito doubled in the 9th and 10th he forced Chris to fill 18 pins. Chris threw a strike on his first ball in the final frame to secure the Fall Major championship and the $3,000 top prize.

The Fall Major tournament drew a nice crowd of 228 entries including desperado entries. A total of 36 bowlers cashed in a prize fund that paid $12,160. The PBA Chameleon pattern was put down and scoring was moderate with cuts ranging from 696 to 727. High series of the tournament was shot by Robert Mendez, Brooklyn, NY with a 773 in the Friday 10pm squad. No one hit the no-tap jackpot all weekend and it is now worth $440 at our next event at AMF Babylon.
