Garden City, NY: The LIGBT, sponsored by Storm, ran Sport Shot Series #9 at AMF Garden City and crowned another $1,000 champion. Ryon Lee, Holbrook, NY won his third LIGBT title by defeating Kenny Bruce, Oceanside, NY 236-232 in the final shootout. Ken earned $600 for his runner-up position. Finishing in third place was Nick Falsetta, N. Babylon, NY with a 220 worth $500. The Garden City sport shot event was a very low scoring event as the “Turnpike” pattern proved to be a challenge for everyone. Ryon’s title run started in the 1pm squad with a 669. In the shootout Ryon had two doubles in the first 6 frames giving him a lead that was never relinquished. Kenny started with 3 strikes in his first 4 frames but never struck again forcing him to settle for 2nd place. Nick started out strong with 3 strikes in his first 4 frames but 3 late opens hurt his title chances. Jimmy and Sunny bowled well but had too many opens and not enough strikes to challenge Ryon.
The LIGBT 2-squad sport shot tournament drew an incredible crowd of 134 entries, paid out $6,610 in prize money, and had 34 bowlers go to the cashing window. The side action awarded an additional $7,215 bringing the total event payout to $13,825.
Scores to cash on the 41 foot “Turnpike” pattern were 642 at 1pm and 629 at 3pm. The wildcard winner, which is the highest 6-game series by a non-finalist, was Eddie Griffith, St. Albans, NY with a 1,281. There were only two 700 series shot for the day Nick Falsetta with a 762 and Dexter Wharton, Brooklyn, NY with a 730. The winners of the Storm ball raffle were Mitch Benov, Seaford, NY and Eddie Griffith.
