Astoria, NY: John Sandano, a 71 year old school bus driver from Brooklyn, NY, won his first LIGBT title by defeating fellow senior bowler Tavie Caratozzolo, Middle Village, NY 239-237 at Astoria Bowl. John earned $1,000 for his victory while Tavie earned $500. Rounding out the top 4 was third place finisher Sean Kelly, Maspeth, NY with a 223 worth $300 and fourth went to Kevin Herrera, Corona, NY with a 189 worth $250. All 4 finalists were looking for their first LIGBT title.
In the final shootout Tavie took the early lead with a triple and kept the lead until he left a 5 pin split in the 8th frame. John took advantage of Tavie’s open by doubling in his 8th and 9th frames and never relinquished the lead. Tavie made it close when he struck out in the final frame but fell 2 pins short of the title.
The Astoria Bowl house shot tournament drew a great summer crowd of 107 entries, advanced 19 bowlers to the finals and paid out $4,420. The tournament pattern was “Bourbon Street” creating cut scores of 747 at 1pm and 757 at 3:30pm. High series of the tournament was shot by Robert Mendez, Brooklyn, NY with an 877 in the 3:30pm squad. The wildcard winner was a new member, Josh Fass with a 1490 six game series.
LIGBT’s next tournament is a special 1 in 4 sport shot event at AMF E. Meadow on Sunday, July 30th. Top prizes are guaranteed to pay $1,000-$500-$300-$250 and an amazing 1 in 4 each squad will advance to the finals and earn a minimum of $100. Entry fees at AMF E. Meadow are $80 & $70.
