Sayville, NY: Ed Eng, Flushing, NY took the 50 mile drive to AMF Sayville and when he traveled the long way back home there was a $1,000 check and a beautiful trophy in the car. Ed won his second LIGBT title, with a 216 handicap game, by defeating two other LIGBT champions; James Walsh, Glen Cove, NY and Preston Cheeks, Brooklyn, NY both who tied with a pair of 211’s worth $400 each.
The final shootout was a great one as any of the three gentlemen could have won the title in the final frame. Jim had the lead going into the tenth but the 6-7 split gave him an open and he finished with a 211. Eddie was up next and he struck on the first ball and spared the rest of the frame for a 216. Preston stepped up to the lanes knowing a double would win the title. Preston got the first strike but his second ball was high and the 4 pin was left standing giving Ed his victory.
The AMF Sayville tournament drew a great crowd of 116 bowlers for the 2-squad event. A total of 24 bowlers cashed in the $4,080 prize fund. The scores were moderate all day as the cut in the 1pm squad was 706 and went down 5 pins to 701 in the 3pm squad. High handicap series of the day went to Julio Arnold, Woodside, NY with a 768.
