Kevin Smith Wins AMF Plainview
Plainview, NY: Kevin Smith, Woodmere, NY, won his first LIGBT title and the $1,000 top prize at AMF Plainview. Kevin rolled a 263 handicap game to defeat Darcy Monroe, Hicksville, NY by 14 pins. Darcy’s 249 handicap game was worth $500. A total of 89 bowlers competed at the AMF Plainview event which paid out $3,130.
The AMF Plainview event was supposed to be competed on the difficult Highway to Hell pattern but it was obvious the house shot was put down and scoring was going to be high all day. Jim Walsh, Glen Cove, NY shot the high handicap series of the day with an 837. The 1pm cut score to the finals was 766 and 772 was the cut in the 3pm squad. The cuts were 70 pins higher than a normal LIGBT tournament.
The final match of the event was a high scoring affair. Halfway through the game the match was close but the turning point was when Darcy left a ringing 10 pin in the 9th frame and missed the spare. What made the match interesting were the two different lines the bowlers were playing. Kevin was throwing a speed ball up the second arrow while Darcy was hooking the ball off the edge. Straight proved victorious in this match.
LIGBT’s next tournament is a 2-squad event at AMF East Meadow on Sunday February 24th. First squad begins at 1pm and top prizes are guaranteed to pay $1,000 & $500.
