East Meadow Champion: Anthony Pepe

Syosset, NY: The LIGBT, sponsored by Columbia 300, had another big event at AMF East Meadow. Close to 120 bowlers packed the center which featured some of the highest scoring in LIGBT history. Standing with the champion’s trophy at the end of the day was scratch winner Anthony Pepe ($1,000) and handicap winner Luis Gomez ($500).
The scoring at AMF East Meadow was outstanding and a surprised to all. Anthony Pepe, from Queens, NY, has been a dominant figure in the LIGBT but had never won a title. That is now history as Anthony took home the $1,000 top prize with a wonderful 258 game in the finals. The final shootout had 2 lefties and 2 righties. The top righty, and second place finisher was senior bowler Joe Conigliaro of Valley Stream, NY who came up 1 pin short with his 257 game. Joe earned $600 for second place.
Other top finishers were David Parker of Brooklyn, who finished third and earned $400 and Tom Zientarski, of Rockville Center, NY who earned $250 for his 4th place finish. Tom, was the qualifying leader by averaging 255 for the day. A total of 11 bowlers advanced to the finals. The total payout for the scratch competition exceeded $5,000.
The 210 and under handicap event had a huge turnout as 72 bowlers jammed the lanes looking to take home the $500 top prize and champion’s trophy. Luis Gomez, Corona, NY outlasted everyone to earn the title. Luis finished third in qualifying but barely made it through the first round of the finals. He shot a 235 to advance which was the cut score.
Luis had to defeat two great competitors in the final shootout. Finishing second was Mack Oakman Jr. of Wheatley Heights, NY who shot a 237 and earned $350. The third place finisher, with a 218 game, was Alex Padmore of Jamaica, NY who earned $250. A total of 18 bowlers advanced to the finals and enjoyed a $2,800 prize fund.
