New Hyde Park, NY:  Hector Diaz Jr., Bronx, NY, won his 5^th LIGBT title, and the $1,000 top prize, at LIGBT’s sport shot event at Herrill Lanes. Hector, who is a 39 year old IT Director, won the sport shot title by defeating Sun Kim, Flushing, NY 241-219 in the final shootout. While Sun earned $600 for second, finishing third was Tony Gee, Floral Park, NY with a 204 worth $400. Rounding out the top 4 was 4^th place finisher Harry Park, Flushing, NY with a 184 worth $300.

The final shootout quickly became a 2 man race as Hector and Sun were tied in the 7^th frame. When Sun doubled in the 7^th and 8^th frame he took a 10 pin lead. But Hector came right back with his own double in the 9^th and 10^th frames to grab the lead back and secure his 5^th title. Tony, who was the 3pm squad leader, had to settle for third place as he couldn’t make a spare in the final shootout. Harry, who won the previous LIGBT tournament, missed 2 easy spares and couldn’t double and settled for 4^th place.

The Herrill event drew a great crowd of 129 entries, advanced 17 bowlers to the finals and cashed another 16 bowlers for $75 (better than 1 in 3.) The total prize fund paid out $5,950 with all finalists earning at least $150. The cut scores on the Beijing pattern were low; 658 & 647. High series of the tournament was shot by our champion Hector Diaz with a 748 in the 1pm squad. The wildcard winner was Sun Kim with a 1343 six game series. Hyo Jin Kim, Flushing, NY was the only women to make the finals when she shot a 706 series in the 1pm squad.

 Farmingdale, NY:  Rodney Williams, a 50 year old Town of Islip employee from Central Islip, NY won the $1,000 top prize at LIGBT’s house shot event at Farmingdale Lanes. Rodney won his first LIGBT title by defeating Guy Sereno, W. Hempstead, NY 260-250 in the final shootout. While Guy earned $500 for second, Lou Getzelman, Massapequa, NY finished third with a 211 worth $300 and fourth went to Kenny Hosek, W. Islip, NY with a 204 earning him $250.

The handicap final shootout quickly became a 2 man race between Rodney and Guy. Rodney, who was getting 31 pins more in handicap than Guy, had a 28 pin lead in the 8^th frame but when he missed a 1 pin spare in the 9^th, and Guy struck, the match was still up for grabs. Guy did his best to pressure Rodney as he threw 2 more strikes in the tenth frame which forced Rodney to throw a double. Rodney put all 3 balls in the pocket to finish like a champion and claim the $1,000 top prize. 

The scratch event finished with a one game match between Alex Henry, Sayville, NY and Guy Sereno. Both of these bowlers qualified for the scratch finals by leading their squad; Guy led the 1pm squad with a 757 and Alex led the 3pm squad with an amazing 791. In the final match Alex defeated Guy 217-205 to win the $450 top prize. While Guy took home $300 for 2^nd, finishing in 3^rd and 4^th was Kenny Hosek, and Anthony D’Elia, E. Islip, NY each earning $125. The scratch prize fund paid out a total of $1,000.

The Farmingdale Lanes event drew a nice crowd of 79 entries (60 handicap/19 scratch), advanced 13 bowlers to the finals and paid out $3,900 in prize money. Cut scores on the house shot were; 750 & 786 for the 49 & under division and 726 & 739 for the seniors. High handicap series was shot by Alex Henry with an 857 in the 3pm squad. The wildcard winner was Michael Adamo, Patchogue, NY with a 1422 series. NOTE: Michael Bagnato, Lindenhurst, NY, was tied for the first squad lead but had to withdraw due to an injury.

Wantagh, NY:  Harry Park, a 46 year old jewelry maker from Flushing, NY, won $1,475 at LIGBT’s Super Bowl Marathon at AMF Wantagh. Harry won the $1,000 top prize in the handicap marathon by defeating Donald Eubanks, Elmsford, NY ($500) 242-235 in the final shootout. He also won $275 by finishing second in the scratch marathon and another $150 in handicap high game pot action. It was a great day for Harry!

The handicap final shootout involved the top two 49 & under bowlers and the top two seniors. In addition to Harry Park, James Marino, Lindenhurst, NY also advanced from the 49 & under group. In addition to Donald Eubanks, Sun Kim, Flushing, NY advanced from the senior division. Harry took control of the shootout when he threw 4 strikes in a row starting in the 6^th frame. Donald had the early lead but missing 2 ten pins cost him the title. Sun Kim had 4 splits and settled for third with a 203 worth $300. James could not carry a strike all game and finished 4^th with a 202 earning him $250.

The scratch event was dominated by Adam Chase, N. Babylon, NY as he shot a 1273 five game series. That’s an amazing 254 average which gave him a solid 94 pin victory over second place finisher Harry Park. Adam won $500 for winning the scratch tournament.

The Super Bowl Marathon at AMF Wantagh drew a nice crowd of 93 entries (68 handicap and 24 scratch.) The handicap event paid out $3,170 to 14 cashers (1 in 5) and the scratch event paid out $1,175 to 5 cashers (also 1 in 5). The high game pots paid out another $750. To cash in the handicap event it took a 1230 in the 49 & under division and a 1223 in the senior division. To cash in the scratch event you had to shoot 1111 or higher. Redy Bugaoan won a Hammer Statement ball in the LIUSBC raffle.

Garden City, NY:  Dwayne Redman, a 56 year old payroll coordinator from the Bronx, won the $3,000 top prize at LIGBT’s Winter Major held at AMF Garden City. Dwayne earned his third LIGBT title (first major) by defeating Glenn Buchanan, New York City 230-226 in the final shootout. While Glenn earned $1,500 for second, finishing third was Frank Lunghi, Farmingdale, NY with a 219 worth $750. Rounding out the top 4 was Audrey Rodriques, Otisville, NY with a 214 worth $500.

The final shootout was one of the most exciting in LIGBT history. The shootout began with 3 out of the 4 bowlers starting with at least 2 opens in their first 4 frames. Glenn was the only bowler that had just one open plus he had a double in his first 4 frames. By the 5^th frame Dwayne had 3 missed spares and trailed Glen by 42 pins. But Dwayne is a fighter and he didn’t give up as he threw 4 strikes in a row heading into the 10^th frame. When Dwayne failed to throw a strike in his final frame all Glenn needed was a mark. Unfortunately he chopped the 6-10 which gave Dwayne the victory when he made his spare. It was an incredible comeback for Dwayne and a very tough loss for Glenn who was looking for his first LIGBT title.

The AMF Garden City event drew a great crowd of 270 entries (including 35 desperado entries), advanced 39 bowlers to the finals and paid out $13,570. The cut scores on the “Autobahn” pattern were moderate and ranged from 661 to 706. High series of the tournament was shot by Diane Allen, Fleetwood Station, NY with a 791 in the Sunday, 2pm squad. There were 2 wildcard winners. The Friday night wildcard was won by Jason Nicholas, Wantagh NY with a 1329 six game series and the Sunday wildcard was won by Jack Saunders, Holbrook, NY with a 1349.

New Hyde Park, NY:  Deon Taitte, a 34 year old welder from Amityville, NY, won the $1,000 top prize at LIGBT’s sport shot event at Herrill Lanes. Deon earned his second LIGBT title by defeating Scott Kampf 232-231 in the final shootout. While Scott earned $600 for second, finishing third was Weldon Drayton, Brentwood, NY with a 228 worth $400. Rounding out the top 6 was 4^th place finisher Cary Fishman, NYC with a 197 worth $350, 5^th went to Tony Scibelli, Williston Park, NY with a 195 earning $300 and 6^th was taken by Maniram Basdeo, Bronx, NY with a 176 worth $250.

The six bowler shootout became a 2 man race by the middle of the game.  Scott, who was giving everyone pins, started off with 6 strikes in his first 7 frames. Meanwhile, Deon was the only other bowler to stay close as he was clean through his first 7 frames. When Deon struck in the 9^th, and Scott spared, the title came down to the final frame. Deon went first and struck. Scott threw an 8 count on his first ball which meant Deon needed one more strike for the title. Deon threw a 6 count and thought he lost but when Scott missed the easy spare Deon had a 1 pin victory and his second LIGBT trophy.   

The Herrill event drew a great crowd of 110 entries, advanced 16 bowlers to the finals and cashed another 14 bowlers for $75 (better than 1 in 3.) The total prize fund paid out $5,380 with all finalists earning at least $150. The cut scores on the Mexico City pattern were low; 637 & 636. High series of the tournament was shot by Weldon with a 737 in the 3pm squad. There were 2 wildcard winners; Darcy Monroe, E. Meadow, NY with a 1280 and Pete DiStefano, Franklin Square, NY with a 1276.

Garden City, NY:  The LIGBT crowned 2 champions on New Year’s Day at AMF Garden City. The handicap marathon champion was Adam DeRossi, Massapequa Park, NY winning $1,000. The scratch marathon champion was Ed Hawkins, Bay Shore, NY winning $700. An incredible entry count of 165 entries competed for over $15,000 in prizes.

The handicap marathon, which attracted 127 entries, featured 2 age divisions. The 49 & under group advanced 2 bowlers to the finals; Jeff Juarez, E. Meadow, NY (1242) and Adam DeRossi (1236). The senior division also advanced 2 bowlers to the finals; Dwayne Redman, Bronx, NY (1237) and Shui Lee, Forest Hills, NY (1233). Dwayne earned a seed into the final match as he was the highest eligible bowler from either division. To cash in the 1 in 5 prize lists the 49 & under cut was 1186 and the senior cut was 1172. All cashers earned a minimum of $100.

The handicap finals had 2 rounds. The first round consisted of 3 bowlers with the winner advancing to meet the top seed, Dwayne Redman, in the final match. Adam DeRossi and Jeff Juarez, were within 1 pin of each other in the first match. Surprisingly, Jeff chopped a spare in the 10^th giving Adam the match. Jeff finished third with a 208 earning him $425. Also making the shootout and finishing fourth was Shui Lee with a 201 worth $350.

The championship match was a blow out as Adam defeated Dwayne 279-182. Dwayne just couldn’t find the line until late in the game but was happy with his $700 second place finish. The victory was Adam’s third LIGBT title.

The scratch marathon prize list was determined by the 5-game totals. Ed Hawkins won the scratch title by 1 pin with an 1163 total. Jeff Juarez, who finished third in the handicap event, shot an 1162 series to finish second and earn $425. Rounding out the top 4 was third place finisher Andrew Mienkiewicz, Massapequa, NY with an 1140 worth $300 and 4^th went to Craig Koppell, Syosset, NY with an 1129 total earning him $200. The scratch event attracted 38 entries and paid out $2,000 to 7 different cashers. The scratch cut to cash was 1073.

Port Jefferson, NY:  Sam Cooke, a 69 year old right-hander from Patchogue, NY won the $1,000 top prize at LIGBT’s house shot event at Port Jeff Bowl. Sam won his second LIGBT title by defeating George Brown, Shirley, NY 244-238 in the final shootout. While George earned $500 for second, Nick Carbonetto, Stony Brook, NY finished third with a 222 worth $300 and fourth went to Jackson Herbert, Lindenhurst, NY with a 191 earning him a $250 scholarship.

The final shootout was close throughout the entire match. Everything came down to the last frame with Sam shooting first. A double by Sam and he would shut everyone out, but he threw a 9 count to open the door. Both Nick and George could double in the 10^th to win their first title but both did not strike. Sam won the title sitting with his wife Cynthia.

The Port Jeff house shot event drew a crowd of 62 entries, advanced 10 bowlers to the finals and paid out $2,900. The cut scores on the house shot were; 721 & 721 for the 49 & under age group and 806 & 726 for the seniors. High series of the tournament was shot by George Brown with an 843 in the 3pm squad. Jacob Klein, East Islip, NY won $250 in the scratch prize list with a 684 series.

Babylon, NY:  Max Thomas, a 59 year old engineer from Stamford, CT won the LIGBT annual Holiday Tournament at AMF Babylon. Amazingly, it was Max’s second consecutive LIGBT title. Max’s third LIGBT title in the past 4 years became reality when he defeated Ron Hatchett, New York, NY, 217-210 to earn the $1,500 top prize. While Ron earned $750 for second, finishing third, just one pin behind, was Kevin Ohrnberger, Manorville, NY with a 209 worth $500. Rounding out the top 4 was Mike Simeone, Lindenhurst, NY with a 192 worth $300.

The final shootout was surprisingly low scoring. Everyone but Max had an open by the 3^rd frame and only Max and Ron threw a double by the 5^th frame. Max kept a small lead throughout the match since he didn’t have an open. But when Max had a surprising open in the final frame it gave Ron and Kevin a chance to grab the title in the tenth if they doubled. Kevin threw the first strike but couldn’t double and Ron got 9 on his first ball in the tenth giving Max the title while sitting down. Max was shocked as anyone that he won the tournament.

The AMF Babylon Holiday Tournament event drew a great crowd of 170 entries, advanced 31 bowlers to the finals and paid out $7,220. The cut scores on the “Boardwalk” pattern were 710, 703, and 702 for the 3 squads. High series of the tournament was shot by Kevin Ohrnberger with an 866 in the noon squad. The wildcard winner was Joe LaBargo, Bayside, NY with a 1369 6-game series. An extra woman was added to the finals; Evelyn Arena, W. Babylon, NY with a 689 series.   

LIGBT’s next tournament is a house shot event at Port Jeff Bowl. This 2-squad event will take place on Sunday, December 16^th and feature guaranteed top prizes of $1,000-$500-$300-$250 with 1 in 6 advancing to the finals.
