Babylon, NY:  Hector Diaz Jr., a 36 year-old IT Director from the Bronx, NY, won the $2,000 top prize at LIGBT’s 2016 Memorial Day Weekend Major at AMF Babylon. Hector secured his first LIGBT title with an impressive 235 game giving him a 13 pin victory over second place finisher Christopher Lee, New York, NY who earned $1,000 with a 222. Finishing third was Frank Lunghi, Farmingdale, NY with a 219 worth $750 and fourth was taken by Gary Paulsen, Massapequa, NY with a 212 worth $500.

The final 4 shootout was dominated early by Hector as he struck in the first 4 out of 5 frames to take a commanding 40 pin lead. But in the final frame, due to some late opens by Hector and a string of strikes by Chris and Gary it was anyone’s title. Both Chris and Gary needed a double in the tenth to win the title but both failed to complete the comeback.

The LIGBT Memorial Day Weekend Major drew a strong 4 squad crowd of 220 entries plus 36 desperado entries. A total of 42 bowlers cashed in a prize fund that paid $10,190. Kegel’s 41 foot Turnpike pattern was used and scoring was on the moderate side for an LIGBT major with cuts ranging from 701 to 723. High series of the tournament was shot by Scott Teitler, Patchogue, NY with a 796 in the Sunday 3pm squad. Thirteen bowlers earned a Brunswick Ultimate Nirvana by shooting the high handicap score each game in every squad.

LIGBT’s next tournament is a house shot event at Astoria Bowl on Sunday, June 5^th (1pm & 3pm). Top prizes are guaranteed to pay $1,000, $500, $300 and $250. E. Meadow, NY:  Jason Nicholas, a 42 year old IT Director from Wantagh, NY loves AMF East Meadow. Jason won his second LIGBT tournament with both victories coming at East Meadow.  Jason defeated Gary Paulsen, Massapequa, NY 243-225 to win the $1,000 top prize. While Gary took home $500 third place went to Jerry Maley, Bayside, NY with a 214 worth $350. Rounding out the final 4 was Mike Nian, also from Bayside, NY, with a 208 earning him $300.

Jason’s second title was due to a clutch finish. Scoring was low throughout the shootout and as the match entered the 7^th frame the top 3 bowlers were separated by less than 5 pins. While Gary doubled in his last 2 frames Jason threw four in a row from frames 7 through 10 to take the title. It was a great finish enjoyed by a big crowd that remained to see who won.

The AMF East Meadow tournament drew a nice spring crowd of 115 entries, advanced 20 bowlers to the finals, and paid out $4,400. The tournament pattern was Kegel’s “Dead Man’s Curve” (42 feet) resulting in cut scores of 725 in the 1pm squad and 727 in the 3pm squad. High series of the tournament was shot by Jerry Maley, Bayside, NY with an 831 in the 3pm squad. Justin Kampf was the wildcard winner with a 1413.

Whitestone, NY:  Christian Ruiz, a staff member at RAB Country Lanes in Staten Island NY, won his first LIGBT handicap title with a victory at Whitestone Lanes. Christian defeated Andre Matos, Bronx, NY, 275-244 to earn the $1,000 top prize. While Andre earned $500 for second, Jonathan Wilson, New York City, came in third with a 242 worth $350. Finishing fourth went to Nasir Ashraf, Jackson Heights, NY with a 205 earning him $300.

All 4 shootout finalists were looking for their first LIGBT title. Christian took the early lead with a triple in frames 3 through 5 and never looked back. When Christian opened in the ninth frame both Andre and Jonathan had a chance to make it close both neither could put a string of strikes together. Despite the event being bowled on a house shot no one threw more than 3 strikes in a row and all 4 shootout finalists had at least one open frame.

The Whitestone Lanes house shot tournament drew a great crowd of 135 entries, advanced 24 bowlers to the finals, and paid out $5,255. The house shot resulted in moderate cut scores for an easy pattern; 763 at 1pm squad and 762 at 3pm. High handicap series of the tournament was shot by Frank Spano in the 3pm squad with an 883.

New Hyde Park, NY:  Dave Martorella, a 46 year-old right hander from Meriden, CT, won his second LIGBT title with an exciting 2 pin victory over Maniram Basdeo and Ferrill McNeill, both from the Bronx, NY. Dave earned $1,000 with a 221 while Maniram and Ferrill, both shot a 219, earning $500 each. Finishing 4^th and earning $300 was Joseph Fabio, Woodside, NY with a 181.

The 4 person shootout was close all ten frames. Ferrill had a 16 pin lead in the middle of the match as he was the only bowler without an open. But when Ferrill threw a split in the seventh frame it was anyone’s title to win. Dave grabbed the lead with a double in the 9^th and 10^th to give him his first LIGBT title in 3 years.

The Herrill Lanes tournament drew an incredible crowd of 175 entries, advanced 29 bowlers to the finals, and paid out $6,100. The tournament pattern was the USBC Open Championship (39 feet) resulting in cut scores of 697 in the 1pm squad and 692 in the 3pm squad. High series of the tournament was shot by Michael Cangelosi, Middle Village, NY with a 765 in the 3pm squad.

Babylon, NY:  Lenny Nguyen, a 49 year-old accountant from Flushing, NY, won the $2,000 top prize at LIGBT’s 2016 Spring Major at AMF Babylon. Lenny secured his first LIGBT title with an impressive 231 game giving him a 14 pin victory over second place finisher Andrew Mienkiewicz, Massapequa, NY who earned $1,000 with a 217. Finishing third was Dave Martorella, Meriden, CT with a 208 worth $750 and fourth was taken by Rich Patson, Lindenhurst, NY with a 203 worth $500.

The shootout included only one previous title holder (Dave Martorella) so as expected the final match started slowly as all 4 bowlers had an open by the 4^th frame. In the 7^th frame only 5 pins separated the 4 bowlers. Lenny’s title march started with a double in the 8^th and 9^th frames and when he marked in the tenth he secured his first title.

The LIGBT Spring Major drew a great 4 squad crowd of 240 entries plus 39 desperado entries. A total of 45 bowlers cashed in a prize fund that paid $11,250. Kegel’s 41 foot Turnpike pattern was used and scoring was on the moderate side for an LIGBT major with cuts ranging from 694 to 722. High series of the tournament was shot by Bill Verni with an 859 in the Sunday 1pm squad. Twelve bowlers earned a Brunswick Danger Zones by shooting the high handicap score each game in every squad.

Sayville, NY:  Frank Spano, a 61 year-old construction manager from Brentwood, NY, won his first LIGBT handicap title with a victory at LIGBT’s house shot tournament at AMF Sayville. Frank defeated Marc Miller, Merrick, NY, 290-258 to earn the $1,000 top prize. While Marc earned $500 for second, Matt Umbenhower, Lake Ronkonkoma, NY came in third with a 253 worth $350. Fourth went to Nick Carbonetto, Stony Brook, NY with a 243 earning him $300 and fifth was taken by Eric Vecchi, Islip Terrace, NY with a 214 worth $250.

All 5 shootout finalists were looking for their first LIGBT title. Frank bowled the most consistent game with an early double but still trailed late in the match. Frank struck out from the eighth frame making up a 17 pin deficit and shutting out the rest of the field in the final frame. Marc had the early lead in the match but opened in the 9^th frame to finish second.

The AMF Sayville house shot tournament drew a nice crowd of 92 entries, advanced 16 bowlers to the finals, and paid out $3,560. The house shot resulted in very high cut scores; 814 at 1pm squad and 800 at 3pm. High scratch and handicap series of the tournament was shot by Eric Vecchi in the 1pm squad with a 751 scratch series and an 880 handicap series.

Plainview, NY:  Gary Paulsen, a 59 year old right-hander from Massapequa, NY, won his first LIGBT title at AMF Plainview. Gary needed a mark in the final frame to defeat second place finisher Dennis Cury, Lynbrook, NY 237-231. Gary earned $1,000 for his victory while Dennis took home $500 for his runner-up position. Finishing third was Rodney Williams, Central Islip, NY with a 228 worth $350, fourth went to Ken Simpson, Shirley, NY with a 219 worth $300, fifth was taken by Juan Ayala, Moriches, NY with a 217 earning him $275, and sixth went to Eddie Eng, Flushing, NY with a 198 worth $250.

The 6-person shootout was a low scoring match with many open frames. This resulted in a very tight match with 5 out of the 6 bowlers having a chance to win in the final frame. When Dennis doubled in the 10^th it forced Gary to mark to win his first title and he completed the task with a crossover strike. Four of the six shootout bowlers were looking for their first LIGBT title.

The AMF Plainview tournament drew a nice crowd of 124 entries, advanced 22 bowlers to the finals, and paid out $4,750. Kegel’s “Highway to Hell” (40 feet) was used resulting in cut scores of 702 in the 1pm squad and 708 in the 3pm squad. High series of the tournament was shot by Dennis Cury with an 810 in the 3pm squad. Six Brunswick Nirvana balls were won via high handicap game. The winners were: Ken Simpson, Adam DeRossi, Eddie Eng, Devon Johnson, Darryl Freeman, and Glenn Swirson.

Wantagh, NY:  Scott Gray, a right-hander from East Meadow, NY, won his first LIGBT title, and the $1,000 top prize, with a great finish in a 6-man shootout. Scott’s first title since joining the club in 2009, was a 23 pin victory over second place finisher Jimmy Walsh, Glen Cove, NY 256-233. While Jim won $500 for his runner-up position, third place was taken by Donald Eubanks, Elmsford, NY with a 216 worth $350. Ed Passaro, Hicksville, NY finished fourth with a 202 for $300 and fifth went to Kyle Lathen, Bronx, NY with a 195 for $250. The sixth and final spot was taken by Justin Kampf, Levittown, NY with a 177 worth $250.

The 6 person shootout was a first for the LIGBT. The leader after five frames was Jimmy Walsh but that lead dissipated when he opened in the last 2 frames. While the other bowlers struggled, Scott finished strong with 5 strikes in his last 3 frames to overcome a 24 pin deficit and cruise to a 23 pin victory.

The AMF Wantagh tournament drew a nice crowd of 117 entries, advanced 21 bowlers to the finals, and paid out $4,555. Kegel’s “Boardwalk” pattern (35 feet) was used resulting in cut scores of 730 in the 1pm squad and 729 in the 3pm squad. High series of the tournament was shot by Justin Kampf with a 795 in the 3pm squad.
